Urges Consumers To Clear Outstanding Bills Without Delay

By Majid Nabi

Srinagar- The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (KPDCL) has asked the consumers in Valley to port their smart meter power connections from postpaid to prepaid mode or else their supply will be disconnected.

The UT owned power distribution utility; KPDCL has also urged the consumers to clear their monthly outstanding bills after July 1 to avoid inconvenience that may arise as a result of disconnection of their connections.

It is pertinent to mention that hydro power utilities including NHPC have curtailed power supply by 25 percent in J&K after the distribution utility failed to clear outstanding debts.

“In order to avoid inconvenience due to the disconnection of electricity supply, you are requested to clear your previous bills and port your electricity connection from postpaid mode to prepaid service immediately by visiting http://smrtbs.jkpdd, net,” KPDCL said in a fresh notification.

A senior KPDCL official told Kashmir Observer that the energy shortage has improved to some extent in J&K and the department is trying to provide adequate power supply to the consumers.

He said the power pilferage and non-payment of power bills by consumers has always been the major cause of power outages in the valley.

“The department is engaged to distribute power supply to all the districts but we cannot sit on electricity when dues are pending from our side and this happens when consumers do not pay monthly bills on time,” he added.

He was however quick to add that power supply will be much better in the coming days provided the consumers use electricity in a judicious manner and desist from resorting to power thefts.

On being asked whether the department has set any deadline for consumers to switch from postpaid to prepaid mode, he said July 1 was the last date; however the consumers might face inconvenience in case they fail to adhere to the government order after July 1, 2023.
