By Majid Nabi

Srinagar– Police on Wednesday arrested a juvenile in connection with the murder of a 45-years-old man, whose body was found lying in a pool of blood from a deserted lane in Batamalloo area of Srinagar last evening.

Victim, identified as Ajaz Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Rasool Bhat of Muminabad Batamalloo  was stabbed to death outside his residence on Tuesday, police said.

A formal case FIR No 67/23 was registered at Batamalloo police station under section 302 IPC in this regard and investigation was set into motion. The father of a 13 years old girl, according to locals, was a wallpaper installer.

Srinagar police solved the blind murder case within 12 hours and arrested a juvenile, in connection with the murder, which is believed to be the outcome of personal animosity.

A police spokesman in a tweet said taking the gravity of the crime into consideration, a petition will be filed in the court under section 15 of the Juvenile Justice Act to treat the accused as an adult.

“One Juvenile (Name withheld) arrested for murder in broad daylight in Batamallo yesterday. He was having a romantic interest with the daughter of the victim. As he is above 16 Yrs & offence is heinous, a petition will be filed in the Hon’ble court to treat him as adult as per sec 15 of JJ act 2015,”police said in a tweet.

Superintendent of Police (SP) South Srinagar, Gaurav Sikarwar while addressing media, said the accused involved in the commission of crime has been arrested, while a knife which was used to carry out the murder has also been recovered.

He said after strenuous efforts, police finally zeroed in on the main accused, who he said confessed to his crime. SP South said the murder took place after the accused entered into heated arguments with the deceased for objecting to his affairs.

SP said the accused in a fit of rage stabbed Bhat with a sharp-edged weapon, resulting in his on the spot death. The accused, SP said, stabbed the deceased multiple times in his neck before fleeing from the scene.

“Investigation was started as soon as the case FIR No 67/2023 under section 302 IPC was registered at police station Batamaloo. The team investigating the incident upon visiting the crime scene, found a pool of blood. Several suspects were rounded-up by the police for questioning after obtaining CCTV footage and bringing other technical methods into use,” he added.

Sikarwar said questioning of suspects led to the identification of the main accused, who confessed to his crime, revealing that the opposition by the deceased to his affairs forced him to attack and kill the victim.

“The accused had a motive to seek revenge from the deceased who was opposing his affairs with his daughter. The accused had purchased a knife from a local market five months ago and was waiting for the right moment to carry out the offense,” SP South said, adding the accused, after finding the deceased alone, seized an opportunity to take revenge.
