SRINAGAR- In its ongoing Professional Learning Communities (PLC) talk series, the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT), Saturday, convened a session titled “Gender Sensitive Curriculum: Upholding the Dignity of Women,” emphasizing the importance of integrating gender-sensitive approaches into the curriculum to promote equality and uphold the dignity of women within educational settings.
The event brought together five diverse departments of the SCERT, namely Inclusive and Special Education (ESL), Education in Languages (EL), Education Planning Monitoring and Management (EPM&M), Education Communication Technology and Computer Science (ECT&CS), and Education in Science and Mathematics (ESM).
Pooling their combined expertise and unwavering dedication, these departments joined forces to create a remarkable platform that resonated with their shared objective of propelling education forward and empowering students to reach their full potential.
The program was conducted using a blended approach, with SCERT faculty participating in person and DIET faculty of Kashmir Division joining online.
The sessions were moderated by Ms. Saima Qadir, Ms. Mutahharah Hanif, Riyaz Ahmad Dar, Jan Mudasir Gul, and Masroof Ahmad.
Dr. Zahoor Ahmad Dar, Assistant Professor and Unit Head (AU-1), delivered the welcome address, underscoring the significance of hosting such programs, while Mohammad Sultan Khan inaugurated the program.
Masood Ali Mir, a senior academic officer, delivered a comprehensive presentation on gender sensitivity to provide detailed insights into the essence and importance of the topic.
“To fully understand the current learning-teaching process and educational settings, it is essential to recognize that they are predominantly male-centric,” Mir said. “By examining the places and positions in which our female students find themselves, we can identify the challenges that impede their progress, prosperity, and empowerment.”
The program proceeded with a panel discussion featuring five SCERT panellists who engaged in a comprehensive discourse on the present state of gender sensitivity in various subjects such as Languages, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, and ICT.
The discussion focused on implementing a gender-sensitive curriculum in teacher training and classroom practices within the school education. The panellists included Masood Ali Mir, Gulzar Ahmad Dar, Ms. Rabia Naseem Mughal, Ms. Asima Shah, and Sheikh Gulzar Ahmad.
A lively Q&A session followed with enthusiastic participation from both DIET and SCERT faculties. During this interactive session, crucial matters were brought to light, including the urgent need for female resource person involvement in teacher education orientation programs and capacity building initiatives.
Wrapping up the program, Ms. Shabnum, the department head of Education in Languages, offered a poignant poem and read out a vote of thanks.
