LG Steps In, Takes Up Centre Issue With Education Minister
Srinagar- The Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG) has been deferred to May 26 in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure that candidates do not have to appear in the examination at centres outside the Union territory, the National Testing Agency (NTA) said on Friday.
The second edition of the undergraduate entrance exam is set to begin across the country on May 21.
The announcement by NTA came hours after J&K Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha urged Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan for Common University Entrance Test (CUET) examination centres for J&K students within the Union Territory.
“Discussed the matter relating to exam centres for the scheduled Common University Entrance Test (CUET) with Hon’ble Union Minister of Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan Ji and requested him for CUET centres in J&K UT. He has assured the issue will be addressed on priority,” the LG office posted on its official Twitter handle.
Pertinently, hundreds of CUET aspirants were in a fix after NTA designated their examination centres outside J&K in contrast to their preferred venues.
“Being sensitive to the needs of candidates and to facilitate the students of Jammu and Kashmir, the NTA is exploring the possibility of creating temporary centres in Kashmir. In view of the above, it has been decided that the CUET (UG) 2023 will now be conducted from 26 May 2023 onwards in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir,” the NTA, which conducts the exam, stated.
It said that there has been “a phenomenal increase” in the number of applicants — 87,309 unique candidates — from Jammu and Kashmir this year.
“…it has been decided that the CUET (UG) 2023 examination scheduled for 21 to 25 May 2023 is cancelled in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir,” the NTA stated.
A total of 87,309 candidates have been registered from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The number of applications this year saw an increase of 41 per cent from the debut edition last year.
CUET-UG remains the second-largest entrance exam in the country in terms of the number of applicants. In the debut edition of CUET-UG, 12.50 lakh students registered themselves and 9.9 lakh submitted applications.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) for medical admissions is the largest entrance test in India with an average of 18 lakh registrations.
The University Grants Commission (UGC), in March last year, announced that undergraduate admissions will be conducted in all central universities through a common entrance test and not based on class 12 marks.
The debut edition of the CUET-UG was conducted in July last year and was marred by glitches, prompting the NTA to cancel the exam at multiple centres. (With PTI inputs)
