Newly-Wed Couple Dies In Pampore, Two More Face Nature’s Fury In Budgam
Srinagar- Four people, including a young couple were killed on Saturday in two separate lightning strikes in the twin districts of Pulwama and Budgam in Kashmir Valley on Saturday, officials said.
25-year-old Hilal Ahmed Hanji and his wife Rozia Jan were working in their fields in Bojhbagh village of Samboora in the saffron town of Pampore on Saturday afternoon when they were struck by a lightning strike, eyewitnesses told Kashmir Observer.
The couple, they said, were removed to the sub-district hospital (SDH) Pampore, where doctors declared them dead.
“The couple was cutting grass inside their fields when heavy rainfall started. They took shelter beneath a tree. Suddenly, a lightning strike hit them and left them collapsed on the ground,” Aqib Ahmad, an eyewitness said.
The couple, Ahmad said, were married for just eight months. Hilal, he said, was the only earning hand in the family of five. He is survived by his elderly parents and a younger brother.
“Around 4:20pm, we received information that some casualties have been reported from Bojhbagh village. When we rushed to the spot, we found a couple lying dead,” an official at the SDH Pampore, told Kashmir Observer.
“We tried to revive them but our efforts didn’t succeed,” the official added.
Hundreds of people thronged the residence of the deceased couple as soon as their bodies reached the village. Heart wrenching scenes were witnessed as the newly-wed couple was taken for burial amid heavy rainfall.
In a similar incident in Budgam, two more people were killed.
Mohammad Sultan Chopan and Taja Bano, wife of Abdul Samad Chopan, both residents of Gurwaith Kalan in Khansahab were killed after lightning struck them in high-altitude meadow in Sochalpathri on Saturday afternoon.
Locals told Kashmir Observer that there were eight people with their livestock at the hilly area when the lightning struck.
