Tarigami Seeks End To ‘Exploitative’ Policies Against Labor Class

By Majid Nabi

Srinagar- Solidarity rallies, protests and seminar’s marked the International Workers Day in Srinagar on Monday. The day is celebrated every year to commemorate the struggle and sacrifices of the workers’ and laborers’ movement.

Several Trade and employees unions staged a protest in Srinagar on the International Workers Day to highlight the demands of daily wagers, need-based workers, Anganwadi and Asha Workers.

They appealed to the government to implement labor laws including that of Minimum Wages Act in J&K and increase monthly stipends of Asha, Anganwadi Workers.

They also urged the LG administration to consider the regularization of all daily rated, need-based and casual employees, who have been working in the different departments on meager monthly salaries on priority.

Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) also staged a rally from Polo Ground to Press Enclave seeking equal work, equal pay and implementation of labor laws in J&K.  Dozens of workers including women participated in the rally to press for the demands of the labor class.

Talking to Kashmir Observer, CITU J&K president, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami said exploitative forces continue to exploit the working class across India including J&K. Tarigami said the labor class cannot be deprived of their rights, hence the government bearing in mind their contribution towards building a society should announce a hike in their daily earnings.

The former MLA from Kulgam Assembly constituency said Asha and Anganwadi workers have been protesting for years for their rights but the government seems to be least bothered to fulfill their genuine demands.

“International Workers Day is observed across the globe including India every year on this day. We also observe this day as a mark of respect to Chicago martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for the rights of the working class. They breathed a new life into labor laws and forced the then rulers to change their stance towards the labor class,” he added.

Paying rich tributes to Chicago martyrs, CPI-M leader said that they laid the foundation of a struggle against the exploitation and atrocities on the laborers, a prominent section of the working class.

Meanwhile several other employees unions including Casual and Daily Wagers Forum held a protest in Srinagar on the occasion and asked the administration to shun stubborn approach and fulfill the demands of all daily rated, casual, consolidate, need base and contractual employees and release their salaries without any delay.
