Srinagar- With an unemployment rate of 23.1 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir has moved to third spot on unemployment ratings making a significant lead of 6 percent from 17.1 in February, as per Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).
According to the CMIE data, there was a substantial increase in the unemployment rate in UT in the month of March.
The figures reveal the unemployment rate was the highest in Haryana at 26.8 per cent. It was closely followed by Rajasthan at 26.4 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir at 23.1 per cent, Sikkim 20.7 per cent, Bihar 17.6 per cent and Jharkhand 17.5 per cent in the month of March.

As indicated by the figures, India currently has an overall unemployment rate of 7.5% – 8.5% in urban and 7.0% in rural areas.
While Haryana continues to dominate the list with the most unemployment rate of 2.4%, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand on the other hand have least unemployment of 0.8% respectively.
“India’s labour markets deteriorated in March 2023. The unemployment rate increased from 7.5 per cent in February to 7.8 per cent in March. The effect of this is compounded by the simultaneous fall in the labour force participation rate, which fell from 39.9 per cent to 39.8 per cent,” CMIE managing director Mahesh Vyas said.
Last month, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha said that over 30,000 government posts have been filled in the last three years while recruitment for another 20,000 posts in the administration will be advertised in 3-4 months.
“More than 30000 vacant government posts have been filled in the last three years. And wherever any wrong was found, a CBI inquiry has been initiated. The recruitment for another 20,000 posts in administration will be advertised in 3-4 months,” he said.
The Union Territory administration, the LG said, wants to saturate self employment in Jammu and Kashmir.
Pertinent to mention, the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) has postponed several recruitment exams following the complaint of irregularities and illegalities.
The government had to cancel the recruitment exams conducted by Jammu and Kashmir Service Selection Board, JKSSB for the posts of Junior Engineer and Sub Inspector after court ruling.
The other states with unemployment rate, in alphabetical order, are as; Andhra Pradesh 7.5, Bihar 17.6, Chhattisgarh, 0.8, Delhi 9.7, Goa 15.9, Gujarat 1.8, Haryana 26.8, Himachal Pradesh 11.7, Jharkhand 17.7, Karnataka 2.3, Kerala 6.7, Madhya Pradesh 3.7, Maharashtra 5.5, Meghalaya 2.6, Odisha 2.6, Puducherry 1.5, Punjab 6.9, Rajasthan 26.4, Sikkim 20.7, Tamil Nadu 3.4, Telangana 5.2, Uttar Pradesh 5.5, Uttrakhand 0.8 and West Bengal 4.8.
