Srinagar is witness to frequent protests these days against installation of Smart Meters Protesters, largely women, are seen raising slogans against the Power Development Department. They oppose the installation of smart meters in residential areas. Why are these people against Smart Meters ?
The protesting people say they would be unable to pay the excessive bills generated by Smart Meters and that meters are an undue burden on common people benefiting only corporators.
“We already have meters installed in our homes and we are paying regular bills as per agreements. What is the fun of installing new meters when businesses are down ?” a protestor asked.
But many observers here say protests are sparked by disinformation about Smart Meters. There is no awareness campaign by the Govt about the benefits of Smart Meters. Already stressed by the inflation and unfavourable situation people feel Smart Meters have been brought to further squeeze them financially.
