Srinagar- Police on Thursday booked three ‘self-styled’ leaders of a lesser known political party, under stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), for allegedly ‘intimidating’ journalists and making anti- national statements during a press conference here.
The trio has also been booked for waging war against India by making provocative statements, thereby causing threat to public order, a senior police official told Kashmir Observer.
Earlier in the day, police in a tweet said that three self-styled leaders were arrested for threatening and intimidating journalists and making anti-national statements during a news conference here, a day earlier.
“They were self-styled leaders and had threatened & intimidated media persons, gave anti-national byte yesterday in a press conference,” police said in a tweet.
A formal case under FIR No. 50/2023 under sections 13 UAPA, 121-A, 153, 153-A and 505 IPC has been registered against the trio at police station Kothibagh.
The trio has been identified as Suhail of Mustafabad HMT, Nadeem Shafi Rather of Maloora HMT and Umar Majeed Wani of Soura.
While Suhail Khan is the president of the hardly known J&K Awami Awaz Party, Nadeem Shafi and Umar Wani are said to be its members.
Khan, besides running the affairs of his party, is also an education consultant. He is accused of having made provocative statements during a news conference at his office in the Maisuma area of the city, before being arrested by the police.
A police official told Kashmir Observer that the trio is presently lodged at Maisuma police station.
