Letter To Editor | Women-Led Self-Help Groups

THE Economic Survey 2022-23, presented in the Parliament last month end, has a special mention about India’s little known, but high-impact banking operation – the women-led Self-help groups (SHG). Some sectors proved resilient even in the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. Perhaps, the robust among these sectors is the self-help group (SHG) movement in India, which is one of the most powerful incubators of female resilience and entrepreneurship in rural areas. SHG is a powerful channel for altering the social construct of gender in the villages of India. With the emergence of SHGs, women in rural areas have become self-dependent and are able to create independent sources of income. Gone are the days when these naïve women would be held down by cultural mores and conned by scamps. They have shown that rural women are capable enough to produce amazing talents with their creative works. There is little doubt that these women are breaking through the shackles of poverty, experiencing the dignity of self-reliance, and making a positive impact in their communities.
