Police Foils AAP March To Raj Bhawan Against Eviction Drive In J&K

By Majid Nabi

SRINAGAR- Police on Thursday foiled the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)youth wing protest march to Raj Bhawan, housing official residence of Lieutenant Governor, against the ongoing anti-encroachment drive in Jammu and Kashmir.

Holding placards in their hands which read “stop rendering us homeless and stop bulldozing poor”, dozens of AAP youth wing activists assembled at Press Enclave this afternoon and staged a protest against the ongoing demolition drive in J&K.

AAP activists threatened to intensify protests in J&K, in case the Lieutenant Governor does not confirm in writing that poor masses having built their houses on Kahcharai or state land will not be touched.

As soon as the protesters tried to march towards Raj Bhawan, which houses the official residence of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, a pose of police deployed in advance prevented them from moving ahead. The protesters later dispersed off peacefully.

“We have assembled here to register our protest against the ongoing eviction drive, which has exclusively been launched to render poor masses homeless in J&K. We demand that the drive should be immediately stopped, failing which protests will be held in all district headquarters in J&K,” a protesting AAP activist, told reporters.

He also claimed that the government’s ongoing demolition drive might trigger a fresh wave of ‘protests’ across  Jammu and Kashmir as the drive has created chaos and confusion everywhere in the newly carved out Union Territory.

It may be in place to mention that the administration has launched an anti-encroachment drive across J&K to retrieve Kahcharai or state land from the encroachers.
