Letter To Editor | Response to ‘Boredom is a Blessing’

Share

THE write-up “Boredom is a blessing” (January 27) brings out the niceties and the hidden advantages of one getting bored at times.  A boring life may not be something all of us strive for, but the truth is that occasional boredom actually has a number of health benefits.  Allowing yourself to be bored once in a while can pay off in terms of your productivity, creativity and ability to handle stress.

We do almost anything to avoid feeling bored. As soon as our interest in an activity begins to decline, we quickly turn to playing games, replying to messages, or engaging with some other easily-accessible distraction.  We do this to avoid the mental discomfort of boredom.  We are never too far away from something to stimulate us or give us a quick dopamine hit. Being bored at times is actually a good thing for us, and its benefits include: boost creativity, enhance productivity, effortless goal setting and novelty exposure. So, while most people chase ways to keep their brain stimulated, we can level up our own lives by doing the opposite – learning to unplug, slow down, and embrace boredom.

Boredom shouldn’t be something we wear or avoid.  Although it is an uncomfortable experience, it is also responsible for unlocking our true potential. If we decide to distract ourselves every time we feel a little bit bored, it means we are seriously limiting our ability to learn, to discover our life mission and achieve incredible things.
