Srinagar- The Rehabilitation therapists have urged the government to provide them with jobs. The BRT graduates said they had pursued their degrees with high hopes but in absence of jobs they have been left to fend for themselves.

Speaking to Kashmir Observer, the ‘unemployed’ Rehabilitation therapists said specially-abled people from lower middle class families in Kashmir cannot afford to visit private clinics and are not able to get proper treatment or rehabilitation therapy because of the high treatment costs.

“We are trained and qualified professionals having a Bachelor’s Degree in rehabilitation. We have pursued our degrees for four and half years which are monitored by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)” said Mehraj Din Joo, who has completed his graduation from CRC Bemina.

“We have been trained specifically to deliver the rehabilitation services to the specially-abled persons of the society, especially children suffering from various kinds of disabilities but in absence of jobs we have forgotten all that we had learnt.” Mehraj Din added.

They further said that people suffering from mental retardation, neurological problems, locomotor disability, impaired vision, autism speech and language problems and cerebral palsy are at the receiving end.

Barjeesa Mohiuddin, another aspirant eyeing a job in the Health Department said that from hearing impairment to visual disability, rehabilitation therapists are trained to help specially-abled people overcome these disabilities.

“The number of persons with disabilities is increasing and the government needs to avail the services of these trained professionals. Around 4 years back, the health department had proposed creation of 90 posts, till date no creation has been accorded.” Barjeesa said.
