SRINAGAR- Srinagar-born goalkeeper Furqan Ahmad Dar has been awarded a sports scholarship worth INR 75,000 by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC).
The corporation, which has its own football team named ONGC FC, selected the 23-year-old goalie for the award to aid his footballing development in the coming months.
“We are pleased to inform you that Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has decided to grant you a sports scholarship in support of your pursuance of a career in the game of football,” ONGC’s Manager (OL), Jagdeep Singh, wrote in his letter to Furqan.
The scholarship is valid from January 1 to March 31 and will provide Furqaan with a monthly sum of INR 25,000 for three months. ONGC will also have a “Game Coordinator” in place to check on Furqan’s performances and training levels.
Furqan has played for a number of top clubs in J&K, including LoneStar Kashmir FC, Real Kashmir FC and Downtown Heroes FC. He started his youth career with J&K Bank’s Under-18 team.
Furqan’s most impressive feat came in December 2021, when he signed for I-League club Sudeva Delhi FC. He was recently seen playing with up and coming football club of the Valley, FC 1. His fine performances for the team caught the eye of the JKFA selectors, who picked Furqan to represent J&K at the ongoing 73rd Santosh Trophy in Kerala. J&K was knocked out of the competition in the group stages after winning 2, losing 2 and drawing 1. Furqan played in four of them.
