Srinagar- At a time when the stray dog menace is taking a heavy toll on the city residents, the Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Athar Amir said the only permitted way to get rid of the stray dog menace is the implementation of the dog sterilization programme.
He made these comments while talking to a local media outlet on Wednesday.
While referring to the stray dog menace, he said, the only permitted way to get rid of the stray animal menace is the implementation of the sterilization programme.
“In order to get rid of the menace, we need to follow the animal birth control rules” he said.
“We have developed a facility at Shuhama, wherein the sterilization of dogs is being regularly done. In order to enhance the sterilization capacity, we are starting the facility at two more places.”
“Sterilization facility at Tengpora is almost 80 percent complete.”
He further said that another facility is being developed at Chattarhama and steps are being taken to enhance the dog sterilization capacity.
Athar said that the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has hired NGOs which are registered with the Animal Welfare Board so that birth control measures are implemented in letter in spirit.
While the dog sterilization programme is going on, the SMC has also chalked out a different strategy wherein the corporation is trying to do away with the dumping of garbage on the roadsides.
Experts say, the accumulated garbage on the roadsides acts as breeding ground for the stray dogs and puts the lives of commuters at risk.
Athar said that the SMC is trying to do away with what he called “the dumpster system.”
“We are trying to go for door to door waste collection and we have procured more vehicles so that we don’t need dumpsters anymore.” He said.
“We are installing underground bins as well so that it is impossible for stray dogs to get access to the garbage.” Athar added.
