Srinagar- The administration of the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Wednesday withdrew a circular seeking details of thousands of students from Jammu and Kashmir for profiling by the Uttar Pradesh police, following massive outrage.
The move had invited sharp criticism from the students and came just a week after a Kashmiri student was allegedly assaulted by fellow students over an objection of playing badminton in the dead of the night.
“..I am directed to inform you that the above mentioned letter stands WITHDRAWN and, therefore, it is requested not to send the information in question. Inconvenience, if any, is regretted,” reads the fresh order shared by J&K Students Association.
The order has been signed by Assistant Controller, Admissions Faisal Waris.
Nasir Khuehami, J&K Students Association National Spokesperson, confirmed to Kashmir Observer that the order stands withdrawn and the students are at ease now.
The Students Association earlier wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah to stop harassment of Kashmiri students in Aligarh Muslim University and urged him to replace the AMU Proctor.
In the last circular, the Assistant Controller Examination of AMU had sought details of the students from J&K on the directions of Superintendent of Police, Aligarh.
The Assistant Controller Examination had asked its deans of the faculties, Dean Student Welfare (DSW), Chairmen of the all Department of Studies in faculties to submit the details of Kashmiri students.
Besides, the details were also sought from the principal of colleges, polytechnic, S.H. Senior Secondary School boys and girls, STS School, AMU Girls School, RMPS AMU City School, AMU ABK School of boys and girls coordinator, AMU Centre Nodal Office, Centre of Professional Courses, Disability Unit, B.E. (Evening) Course, Interdicts, Biotech Unit, Interdisciplinary Centre for Artificial Intelligence, interdis centre for green and renewable energy
The details which were sought included the name of the student, father’s name, current address, permanent address, mobile number, along with details of courses and department.
