Srinagar- The residents of Harwan and Shalimar localities have voiced their displeasure over the lack of public transport facilities during evening hours.

Residents from Shalimar and Harwan areas said that the lack of transportation during late hours is taking a heavy toll on the residents living in the outskirts of the city.

Social Activist, Nasir Hussain said the unavailability of transport during evening hours is a cause of worry for the residents.

“Most of the commuters from Harwan and Shalimar use public transport to reach their respective destinations on a daily basis. The public transport disappears from the roads during evening hours. We are unable to find a cab after 5 pm even from Lal Chowk to Harwan.” Nasir said.

Pertinently, a large number of commuters can be seen daily waiting for passenger buses and Cabs near Regal Chowk, Ghanta Ghar, Dalgate and its adjacent areas.

Moreover, commuters allege that some cabs plying on the Lal Chowk-Harwan route ply only up to Shalimar.

“Some cab operators, due to their own convenience, don’t go beyond Shalimar. This is despite the fact that they are part of the Harwan Cab service. Sumo’s ferrying passengers on the Harwan route change or shorten their destinations after 3 pm.” a female student said on anonymity.

She further said the residents of Harwan particularly the students and the elderly are suffering the most.

“Due to the lack of transport during evening hours, students have to hitchhike in the evening. It is not safe for female students. Authorities should ensure that apart from cabs other modes of transport need to be made available for the convenience of passengers.”

In a bid to raise the issue with the concerned authorities, Kashmir Observer tried to contact Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir Sajid Yahya Naqash. However, he did not respond to repeated calls.
