Letter To Editor | Abandoned Dustbins

THIS in response to the article titled “A Tale of Forlorn Garbage Bins” By Raja Muzaffar Bhat (Kashmir Observer 21-11-22) . It is a matter of concern that there is only one landfill site in the vicinity of Srinagar city where all the municipal solid waste is dumped that too not in a scientific manner. Now I’d like you to put this in ratio with the increasing population (almost 7,000,000) of Kashmir. One landfill site for the waste products of 7,000,000 people? So that’s exactly why we need garbage bins to dispose of waste products but they should be cleared as well on regular intervals.

We live in a society  where people prefer living a comfortable and luxurious life for themselves and not care about the environment or for the future generation?

Instead of putting any effort on the implementation of Municipal Solid Waste Rules 2016, the government preferred supplying thousands of steel trash bins and the majority of these bins do not hold any waste or even if they do, no one is there to empty them. This is so strange.  So here we have two types of bins, one that is more of an empty container than a dustbin, and the other overflowing with garbage and none of them are doing any favor to the environment ?

Even though the government of India from the past few years has launched various programmes like the Swachh Bharat Mission & adopted Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 I don’t think that any of them has made our situation better. What we need is immediate action .

When Apollo 11 landed on the moon and for the first time, humans set their feet on the moon, a picture was taken by the astronauts that showed us how our planet looked from the outside for the first time ever. It is considered to be the best picture taken in history because of the message that was sent after it, It said, “We set out to explore the moon, but discovered the Earth instead” and this is the picture that inspires millions of people to protect what is most important to us- our blue planet.
