Letter To Editor | Nehru’s India

TODAY the nation remembered India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his 133rd birth anniversary. A people’s prime minister, statesman, intellectual and scholar, Nehru was one of the highly recognized world leaders of his time. His policies on economy, science and technology, international relations and education had all designed the future course of the country. Nehru strongly believed in scientific knowledge and propagated reasoning and rationality as the basis of all learning. He also believed that the role of education in an individual’s life was not restricted to academia alone but extended to one’s economic ambitions and social contributions as well. Perhaps, the most authentic way to learn and understand Nehru’s role in nation-building is to analyse the legacy of intellect left behind by him through his writings which can be interpreted as prescriptive texts. He left his writings that were to be preserved for posterity. And through his cerebral writings, Nehru continues to speak with every Indian even today.

Nehru’s contributions have been foundational and colossal in building India as a secular and democratic republic which would have a socialistic commonsense. It is not only difficult, but even impossible for the nation to forget the Nehruvian legacy. Nehru laid the foundation for transformational changes, paving the way for India’s eventual emergence as a major economic hub on the global center-stage. In fact, Nehru prided in calling himself as the ‘prime servant’ of the nation, and that was the humility of this great man. Not for nothing, India’s first Prime Minister was hailed as the ‘Architect of Modern India.’
