Protests In Leh, Kargil For Statehood, Constitutional Safeguards

Srinagar- Hundreds of people in the Union Territory of Ladakh on Wednesday staged a massive protest demanding full statehood for the cold desert region, besides constitutional safeguards under the 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Barring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) all political, religious and social organisations under the banners of Leh Apex Body (LAB) in Ladakh and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) in the Shia dominated Kargil staged peaceful protest in favour of their demands.

Besides statehood and constitutional safeguards under sixth schedule, the two major amalgams are also demanding two Lok Sabha and a Raj Sabha seat besides filling up of 10,000 to 12,000 vacancies to overcome unemployment.

According to reports from Kargil, hundreds of protesters marched from Hussaini Park to Lal Chowk and shouted slogans in favour of their demands. Among others who addressed the protesters, included Qamar Ali Akhoon and Haji Asgar Ali Karbalaie.

In Leh, a similar protest was taken out from NDS Stadium to Polo Ground. The protesters led by Thuptsan Chhewang (former MP), and Chering Dorjay Lakrook asked the centre to fulfill their genuine demands at the earliest.
