IMHANS Holds Workshop On Child Development Disorder & Disabilities


Srinagar- Five days training workshop on “Child Development disorder and disabilities” in collaboration with NIMHANS Bangalore is being conducted by IMHANS Kashmir.

The five day training program that started from 8th of September 2022, is being facilitated by resource persons form NIMHANS that include Dr. Shekhar Seshadari (Senior Professor NIMHANS- Child and Adolescent psychiatry and Advisor SAMVAD) and Dr. Harshani Manohar (psychiatrist NIMHANS).

The inaugural session of the program was attended by principal Government medical college Srinagar-Dr. Samia Rashid, HOD IMHANS Dr. Maqbool Dar, Senior Professor IMHANS Dr. Arshid Hussain, Professor Dr. Zaid Ahmad Wani Incharge CGWC, Dr. Yasir Rather Incharge DDC.

The opening remarks were given by Dr. Maqbool Dar (HOD IMHANS) who discussed the brief history of psychiatry in Kashmir and highlighted the achievements of IMHANS Kashmir and Child Guidance and Wellbeing Centre (CGWC).

Dr. Samia Rashid (GMC principal) deliberated on developmental disorders and their impact on children and adolescents. She also congratulated everyone for their efforts to bring forth this collaboration between NIMHANS and CGWC IMHANS for initiating such capacity building exercises.

The Training program is focused on covering various Child development disorders like Autism, ADHD and Learning disorders in children and adolescents. The teaching methodology is based on interactive methods like role play, discussing case vignettes and discussion on movies. The training program aims to capacitate the participants on better understanding and management of neurodevelopmental disorders.

The training program aims at capacitating professionals such as Psychiatrists, Social workers, Clinical psychologists and other therapists working in disability sector such as- remedial educators, occupational therapists and speech therapist. More than 50 professionals are sought to be capacitated during the training program.

The program entails a detailed analysis and discussion on topics such as evaluation and interventions for children with intellectual disorder, autism Spectrum Disorder and its early intervention, attention Deficit hyperactivity Disorder, specific Learning Disability, psychiatric comorbidities in children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders

Given the increasing incidences of these neurodevelopmental disorders among children/ adolescents it becomes imperative to develop capacity for early timely intervention
