Will Restore Reputation Of Shahr-e-Khas, Once Heartbeat Of Kashmir: LG

Srinagar- Launching a veiled attack against separatists, the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha said on Wednesday that some people with vested interest are rattled by the all-round development taking place in Jammu and Kashmir and the families of those who misled our children, are living a comfortable life in the big cities of the country and abroad, while our children have suffered.

Sinha made these remarks during the inauguration of the Ellahi Bagh Indoor Sports Stadium, constructed at a cost of Rs 4 cr under PMDP, an official spokesperson said.

“I was told by local people that for the first time in 75 years any head of the state visited Downtown Srinagar. They said many areas were known for the wrong reasons. But, I believe downtown Srinagar has shed its past and it is now a new address of Indian Sporting Heroes,” the LG said.

Observing that J&K is moving ahead on the path of progress, the spokesperson said that the LG called upon the elders, parents and the community members to join the efforts to completely eradicate the menace of drug addiction to give a secure and prosperous future to the new generation.

“We have to restore the reputation of Shahr-e-Khas, once called the heartbeat of Kashmir. Some people with vested interest are rattled by the all-round development taking place in J&K UT. Efforts were also made to mislead many of our youth. The entire families of those who misled our children, are living a comfortable life in the big cities of the country and abroad while our children have suffered. There is no place for such elements in civilized society,” the LG said.

Congratulating the locals, especially the youth of downtown area for the new sports facility, the LG, as per the spokesperson said that Shahr-e-Khas area has evolved as a hub of sporting activities, with youngsters determined to achieve glory in sports.

“In the last two years, downtown has witnessed a massive rise in the number of sports being played and a large number of youth pursuing sports professionally,” he said.

Amid the cheers of thousands of locals present at the venue, the spokesperson said, the LG recounted names of top-class players who recently went to represent the country at the International sporting events.

“Several youngsters from downtown Srinagar have proved their mettle in International Championships. The day is not far when we will see the youth of Shahr-e-Khas representing the country in the Olympics and earning a new identity of heroes and the respect for J&K and the country,” the LG said.

Sinha also said that determination of downtown youth to see the tricolor fly high has revived the legacy of football & other games,

The growing sports culture in J&K is reflected in the remarkable revolution in different sports disciplines. In the last three years, we have ensured unprecedented progress with regard to infrastructure, career progression, & future of the players. An enabling environment through new policies has been created which fills the gap of the last 70 years,” the LG added.

Complete Projects Within Set Timelines’

Sinha also directed officers to ensure that there are no inordinate delays in execution of mega road projects in the Union Territory and emphasized on dedicated focus to complete the projects within set timelines.

Sinha passed these directions while chairing a high level meeting, at Civil Secretariat, to review the implementation and progress of mega road projects in Jammu & Kashmir, an official spokesperson said.

During the meeting, he said, the LG took stock of the status of various roads, tunnels, bridges projects under Central sector, Centrally Sponsored and UT Sector schemes including Prime Minister’s Development Package, Parvatmala, PMGSY, CRIF, NABARD, C&T Macadamization, Pothole-free Road programme, Bridge programme and Road Sector.

According to the spokesperson, the LG emphasized on dedicated focus to complete the projects within set timelines and passed explicit directions to streamline the planning, tendering and execution process.

“It should be ensured that there are no inordinate delays in execution of projects,” Sinha said.

The LG, as per the spokesperson directed to develop a robust system for reporting of the damages and potholes on the roads so that corrective measures can be taken at the earliest.

Sinha, he said, further asked the officials to assess the area specific requirements and prepare projects’ plans accordingly.

On being informed that 132 bridges are being targeted to be completed this year, the spokesperson said that the LG advised for exploring feasibility of pre-fabricated short span bridges in areas where immediate action is required.

“Taking serious note of the various vulnerable spots along the roads, the Lt Governor instructed for installing crash barriers at such places to prevent accidents,” he added.

While reviewing the work on Z-Morh tunnel, the spokesperson said that the LG directed the concerned officials to complete the work on the escape tunnel at the earliest.

“Referring to various complaints received from different quarters regarding maintenance and repair work of the government infrastructure, the Lt Governor directed the officials to take necessary measures in this regard,” he added.
