Says tents, langars set up for first time in affected area

Srinagar: National Conference (NC) president and Member of Parliament Dr Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said that the government should order a probe into the tragedy that struck along Amarnath cave route.

Sixteen people were killed and dozens injured when a cloudburst hit Baltal base camp of Amarnath Yatra, and caused flash floods in the area that washed away dozens of tents on Friday evening.

“We are saddened by the tragedy. We hope LG Manoj Sinha will set up a commission on how it happened,” he told reporters here.

The former three time chief minister demanded adequate compensation for those who lost their lives and said such things should not happen.

Abdullah said that the area where the cloudburst hit is very ‘dangerous’ and tents and langars should not have been set up there. “It is for the first time (tents and langars were set up there). They used to be at Panjtarni. The government should probe it so that such things do not occur in the future,” Abdullah added.
