Srinagar- Street vendors from Boulevard road held a protest at Press Enclave on Friday saying that the government no longer allows them to sell their goods on the roadside.
The street vendors say it has been two months that they are not being allowed to set up their stalls on the Boulevard road which has left them jobless.
“Since Eid ul Fitr we are not allowed to do business at the Boulevard road, ” said Atif Rasool, one of the protesters.
“We are a group of 120 people who are solely dependent on the street business for our livelihood and we are struggling to pay the school fee of our children” he added.
Street vendors say they have been moving from pillar to post to get their demands addressed but there has been no breakthrough.
“We are not asking for jobs from the government, instead we want the administration to help them do business” said street vendors.
They said it is after years that Tourism sector is witnessing a boom and all their hopes of doing good business this year have failed.
Ishtiyaq Ahmad, another protester, said that they do not hinder the movement of vehicles or pedestrians.
“We do not have carts, instead we have small stalls and we sell shawls, artificial jewelry and other Papier Mache Items” Ishtiyaq said.
“It has been years that we have been selling our goods, I personally have been selling these items since the last twelve years” he added.
“We want to sit during late night hours, we request the administration to allow us to do business”.
The protestors urged the LG administration to look into their problems. They hoped the LG administration would look into their demands.
