Srinagar- Two local militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed in a firefight with government forces in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday, police said.
Yasir Wani of Wangund, Kulgam and Raees Manzoor of Chotipora, Shopian were killed in an encounter that erupted after a joint team of police and army’s 9RR launched a cordon and search operation in Nowpora, Mir Bazaar area of the district, a police spokesperson said.
As per police records, he said, both the killed militants were categorized and part of groups involved in several crime cases including attacks on Police/SF and “civilian atrocities”.
“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 01 AK-47 rifle and 01 Pistol were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he said.
“In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
Giving more details of the operation, the spokesperson said that the search operation was launched on the basis of specific input about the presence of militants in the village.
He said during the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter.
“Later on CRPF (18Bn) also joined the operation,” the spokesperson said, adding in the ensuing encounter, two local categorized militants of LeT were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.
According to the spokesperson, IGP Kashmir congratulated the joint teams for conducting the operation in professional manner without collateral damage.
“He also termed the operation as a big success as the operation site was very close to National Highway (Yatra route),” he added.
