WE have heard tales from our elders about the pristine water bodies of Kashmir, which were once so pure that people would directly drink from the water bodies. Once known for crystal clear waters, the only remains of Brari Nambal are waste heaps and weeds. Barari Nambal is an important ecological lagoon located in the heart of shehr-e-khaas but due to the neglect of the government and absence of conservation measures, the lagoon is on the verge of extinction owing to dire pollution and unending encroachments. The lagoon looks more like a dumping yard than a water body.
Although the government did formulate an extensive project for the restoration of Brari Nambal in 2015 but despite the passing of nearly a decade, the government has consistently failed in achieving so. So far there has been aesthetic work on the peripheries of the lagoon but no actual measure has been taken to improve its water quality which should have been the very first priority of the authorities. We need to realise that building good looking kiosks on the banks of the lagoon will not aid the conservation of the water body, it needs frequent dredging and cleaning to keep its water fresh. The government should pay proper heed to this matter before it’s too late and we lose a very significant cultural and ecological asset of ours.
