Srinagar- As Kashmir Valley is witnessing a brisk tourism season after three years of disturbances, the health experts on Monday warned of a possible fourth wave hitting the region soon in wake of the sudden spike in the daily Coronavirus cases.
Dr Saleem Khan, Head of the Department Community Medicine, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar said the number of daily Coronavirus cases in the Valley have seen a rise over a last few days.
“All these cases aren’t severe but this gives us the indication that more cases will surface in the coming weeks,” Khan told Kashmir Observer.
He added that the hospital in Srinagar witness over 20 Covid-19 cases everyday instead of 2-3 in the previous months.
The senior doctor further said that patients with the complaints of cough, throat infection and body ache are frequently visiting hospitals to avail treatment.
Jammu and Kashmir on Monday reported 19 new cases of Covid-19, twelve among them from the Valley. On Sunday, out of 32 fresh cases of virus, 15 were detected in the Kashmir Valley.
A doctor from Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital (SMHS) told Kashmir Observer that since a number of tourists came from different parts of the country and the locals are also rushing to different tourist resorts in the valley, it might be the reason for a spurt in Covid-19 cases.
“People need to wear masks again and take precautions,” he said.
Amid the spike in numbers, the Medical Superintendent of SMHS, Dr. Kanwaljeet Singh on Monday called a meeting to chalk-out a strategy to deal with another possible wave of the deadly infection.
“Since the OPD based patients of Covid-19 cases were coming regularly now. We decided to meet and discuss the future plans to deal with the wave,” Singh said.
He further added that although they haven’t admitted any patient yet, they are apprehensive about the surge in daily cases.
“Most of the cases were returnees from outside the Valley. The people need to wear the mask,” Dr. Singh added.
It may be noted; the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur has predicted a fourth wave in June. The severity of the fourth wave depends on emergence of new variants and immunization coverage.
