Police Officer Shot Dead In South Kashmir

Srinagar- A police officer was shot dead by unidentified militants inside his paddy fields in Samboora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said Saturday.

Sub-Inspector Farooq Ahmad Mir, a resident of Samboora in Pampore, was shot dead by militants on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, a police spokesperson said. Mir was shot dead by militants inside his paddy fields, just a walking distance from his home.

“Dead body of Farooq Ah Mir of Samboora Si(M) posted in IRP 23 BN was found in paddy fields near his home. Preliminary #investigation reveals that he had left his home for work in his paddy fields yesterday in the evening, where he was shot dead by #terrorists using a pistol,” Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

The deceased police officer is survived by an aged father and three children, including two daughters. His eldest daughter is studying MBBS in Bangladesh and the younger one in class 12th. His son is a class 7th student.

Mir was appointed as constable in the police department in the year 1998. He was promoted to selection grade constable after clearing the departmental examination.

In 2012, he was promoted as Head Constable, and six years later as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI).

In December last, Mir was promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector and posted in Indian Reserve Police (IRP) 23 battalion.

Meanwhile, National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah and vice president Omar Abdullah on Saturday condemned the killing of police Sub Inspector Farooq Ahmad Mir in Pulwama, terming it dastardly and horrific.

“Yet another family has been devastated. Such dastardly acts only leave a trail of everlasting agony behind them. I condemn this act of terror in the strongest possible terms. My heart goes out to the bereaved family. May Almighty give them strength to bear the pain of this irreparable loss, and eternal peace to the departed,” Farooq Abdullah said.

Condemning the killing, Omar Abdullah said he was deeply saddened by the horrific killing of the police officer.

“I offer my condolences with the bereaved and pray to the Almighty that they find enough strength to bear this inconsolable loss. May the deceased rest in peace,” Omar Abdullah said.

IED Defused on Handwara Highway

Security forces on Saturday detected and defused an IED along Baramulla-Handwara highway in Ganapora area of Langate, officials said Saturday.

Soon after the suspicious device was detected, police rushed to the spot and subsequently called a bomb disposal squad (BDS),” the officials said.

“Later the BDS team of army’s 30-RR blasted the suspicious object at about 9:23 am without causing any damage and the traffic movement which was suspended on the highway as a precautionary measure was restored as well,” they said.

Last week, an IED was destroyed on Baramulla-Srinagar highway after it was found planted on the roadside.
