City Road In Shambles, Commuters Aghast

Srinagar- Commuters have long complained of bumpy rides in Srinagar but authorities have failed to get the roads blacktopped. Usually roads are blacktopped during the start of the summer months but this year authorities have failed to macadamize city roads on time.

“The roads in the city are full of potholes and travelling has become very difficult. Some roads have not been macadamized in the last few years”, said Syed Mutahar, a commuter.

“Authorities are delaying macadamization for reasons better known to them” he added.

“Apart from causing problems for local commuters, bad roads in and around the city are maligning the image of Kashmir as a top tourist destination” said Shadab Abbas, a local from Alamgari Bazar.

Chief R&B Chief Engineer Er Rafiq Ahmad Rafiq said the Department had to face some issues this year, one of the reasons was the high cost of petroleum products.

Another reason he said was the dispute over rates with the contractors.

“We started the tendering process in the month of March but the contractors were not comfortable with the rates. So we went for the revision of rates”, he said.

“We will complete the macadamization process in one month’s time” he said.
