Big Success, They Were Planning Attack On Amarnath Yatra: IGP
Srinagar- Police on Tuesday claimed to have averted a major threat to the upcoming Amarnath Yatra by killing two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, including a Pakistani national in an encounter in this capital city.
Abdullah Goujri of Faisalabad Pakistan and his local associate Adil Hussain Mir alias Sufian alias Musaib of Pahalgam in Anantnag district were killed in a swift encounter in Bemina area of this capital city, a police spokesperson said Tuesday. Mir, according to police, had crossed over to Pakistan in 2018 on a visit visa through Wagah border.
Divulging more details of the encounter, the spokesperson said that police established a checkpoint in Bemina area on the basis of specific information about the movement of militants, who had earlier escaped from an encounter in Sopore.
The militants, he said, were being tracked continuously.
During naka checking, the spokesperson said that two suspects opened indiscriminate fire upon the policemen when the latter challenged them at the checkpoint
“The fire was however effectively retaliated, leading to a brief encounter. In the initial exchange of fire, five police personnel received minor injuries who were immediately evacuated to hospital for the treatment of their injuries,” he said.
In the ensuing brief encounter, he said, the two militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.
While interacting with media, the spokesperson said that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said that Pakistan based “terror handlers” had sent two Pakistani LeT militants alongwith the local militant Adil Hussain Mir with the directions to carry out attacks on Amarnath Yatra.
“However, all the three terrorists have been killed now in two separate encounters i.e; one at Sopore & in today’s brief encounter at Bemina, Srinagar,” Kumar added.
The IGP, as per the spokesperson, appreciated the role of police for tracking & neutralizing the militants who had recently escaped in Sopore encounter.
“He further said it is a big success for us as they were planning to attack Amarnath Yatra however the prompt & timely action by the police led to the elimination of both the terrorists and thereby averting the possible major threat,” he added.
The police claimed recovery of incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 2 AK-47 rifles, 10 magazines, 165 live cartridges, Y-SMS device, Matrix sheets, Pakistani medicines etc from the site of encounter.
“All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes,” he said.
“In this connection, Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
Encounter Breaks-out In Kulgam
In the evening news reports from South Kashmir said, an unspecified number of militants have been trapped in a cordon laid by the government forces in Kulgam district on Tuesday.
Officials said a joint team of police and army launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Mishipora area of the district after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area.
The hiding militants, they said, fired upon the search team when they started advancing towards the suspected spot.
The officials said that joint team returned the fire triggering off an encounter.
“The exchange of gunfire continues intermittently. The cordon has been further tightened to prevent militants from fleeing taking cover of the darkness,” the officials added.
