Two Militants Killed In South Kashmir Gunfight

Srinagar- Two local militants of Hizbul-Mujahideen (HM) were killed on Saturday in a brief encounter with government forces in Bijbehara area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, police said.

A joint team of police, army’s 3RR and the personnel of CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Shattipora village of Bijbehara on Saturday afternoon on the basis of a specific input about the presence of militants in the village, a police spokesperson said.

The hiding militants, he said, opened fire upon the search team when they started advancing towards the suspected spot. He said that the joint team returned the fire triggering off an encounter.

In the brief exchange of fire, the spokesperson said, two local Hizb militants were killed and their bodies recovered from the encounter site.

The police identified the duo as Ishfaq Ahmad Ganie son of Shalgam, Srigufwara and Yawar Ayub Dar of Dogripora Awantipora.

As per police records, the spokesperson said that both the killed militants were part of groups involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on Police/SF and “civilian atrocities”.

Besides, he said, killed militant Yawar was also involved in an attempt to murder attack on a GRP personnel at Railway Station Panzgam in december last year and and IED blast on CRPF bunker at Larmoo area on May 2, this month.

“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition have been recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he added.

According to the spokesperson, the IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar congratulated the joint forces for carrying out the operation in professional manner without any collateral damage.

“In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.

Pertinently, 12 militants including six locals and six foreign nationals have been killed in different encounters across the Valley in the last four days
