Srinagar- The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday arrested a school teacher for allegedly molesting a minor student in Vichar Nag area of Srinagar city.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Balwal told Kashmir Observer that a 30-year old private school teacher was arrested after a complaint was received from a parent that his daughter was molested.
“We registered a complaint and arrested the accused within time on the same day.” Balwal said.
He said an FIR number 27/2022 under section 376 and POSCO Act has been registered by police station Soura.
On Saturday, scores of residents and family members of the minor staged a protest demanding punishment for the accused. Many protesters alleged that it was a case of rape.
However, the Srinagar police denied the allegations and said that the news which is “going viral” on social media about rape of a minor girl is fake.
“Two days ago, there was a complaint lodged by a family about suspected molestation of a minor girl, wherein Srinagar police lodged an FIR under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO Act. The accused was also arrested immediately,” the police said without naming the accused.
“Further, there was no complaint of rape by family of members of minor girl, which was corroborated by medical examination as well,” the police said, adding, “Some unscrupulous elements are trying to give this incident a communal colour by giving motivated statements with intention to create communal divide”. The police said “Public is requested not to pay heed to such rumours.”
Balwal told Kashmir Observer that the medical examination of the girl showed that there was no rape.

Balwal, however said there was an attempt to molest the girl and we will take action against the accused. He further said both the families were living in the same building and were known to each other.
“We will file a chargesheet in the case soon and the accused will be punished if found guilty,” he added.
