3 Skill Dev Trainings For Rural Youth Conclude At SKUAST

Srinagar: The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-Kashmir), Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganie on Saturday said that the climatic conditions in the Valley are conductive for making it a leading producer and exporter of quality seeds to the major parts of the world.

Ganie, who assumed charge of VC SKUAST on Thursday, made these remarks on the concluding day of three training programmes on skill development conducted by directorate of extension in collaboration with the division of vegetable Sciences SKAUST-K and MANAGE Hyderabad for rural youth (STRY) here on Saturday, an official spokesperson said.

The three trainings were conducted on “Kitchen gardening – a way towards Nutritional Security an economic empowerment”, “Quality seed production of vegetables crops with special reference to tissue culture techniques” and “ Production of Organic Manure with special reference to vermicomposting technology”

Prof Ganie was Chief Guest on valedictory function and Prof. Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi, Director Extension was guest of honour. The programme was also attended by Prof Sarfaraz A. Wani Director Research, HoD Vegetable Science Dr. Sumiti Narayan, Associate Directors of Directorate Scientists of Division of Vegetable Sciences, the official spokesperson said.

He said that Ganie in his maiden address to the rural youth and extensionists from SKUAST-Kashmir appreciated the interest shown by the participants form far flung areas of the Valley in advanced scientific farming for quality produce and choosing agriculture as an enterprise.

The Vice-Chancellor, he said, stressed upon the fact that agriculture if taken on scientific lines can lead the UT of J&K to self-sufficiency and nutritional security citing the examples from the west.

“He stressed that the climatic conditions in the valley are conductive for making it a leading producer and exporter of quality seeds to the major parts of the world. Besides he stress upon the organic farming practice for production of healthy vegetables and other agricultural products for healthy and prosperous society. He promised a complete support for undertaking all such programmes for empowering rural youth,” the official spokesperson said.

He further said that the Vice-Chancellor appreciated the efforts of Directorate of Extension under the leadership of Prof. Dil Mohammad Makdhoomi in taking the extension services to newer heights.

According to the official spokesperson, Makhdoomi informed the house that SAMETI of Kashmir under Director Extension SKUAST-K has been rated at number one in the country as it has surpassed the target of STRY programmes assigned particularly in aspirational districts of Kupwapra and Baramulla.

“We have completed such programmes with a total of 58 programmes with wonderful outcome with a number of rural youth turning out as entrepreneur,” he said.

The feedback obtained from the participating rural youth impressed Vice-Chancellor and participants. The function ended with vote of thanks to chair, the official spokesperson said.
