SRINAGAR: The Jammu & Kashmir Sqay Association (JKSA) on Saturday conducted selection trials for the upcoming All India Sqay Championship (AISC) scheduled to be held at Pahalgam from August 24 to 26 of this year.

30 players were selected during the trials that took place at the International Sqay Martial Art Academy (ISMAA) in Pampore.

“About 80 players from different districts of the UT participated in the selection trials in which 30 players (15 men, 15 women) were selected for the upcoming championship,” an official statement said.

“Bashir Ahmad, Manager, Sports Stadium Pulwama was deputed as observer by the J&K Sports Council who monitored the free and impartial selection of players,” the statement concluded.

Sqay, a sword-fighting form of martial arts, originated in Kashmir Valley and has spread across the globe. Armed sqay makes use of a curved single-edge sword paired with a shield, or one sword in each hand. Unarmed techniques incorporate kicks, punches, locks and chops.

The indigenous game is governed by the Sqay Federation of India.
