Kulgam: Orchardists in Kashmir have expressed concern over the substandard quality of pesticides available in the market.
Abdul Hameed Ganai, an orchardist expressed serious concern over the damages caused to the crop due to supply of substandard pesticides, fertilisers and fungicides to the Kashmir valley.
He said that recently a pesticide factory was sealed for supplying substandard pesticides to the Kashmir valley. He demanded impartial inquiry into the allegations by growers and orchardists so that those responsible are identified and booked in the court of law.
“No efforts have been made by the administration to check the quality of pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers before it is sold in the market. Orchardists often lose fruits after spraying spurious pesticide in orchards but the government has never taken any step to stop it,” he claimed.
Ganai said that lackadaisical approach of the concerned agencies to check this menace has compelled the peasant community to protest.
“For past few years these substandard fertilizers and pesticides are being openly sold in the market and authorities are watching as mute spectators,” he alleged.
He demanded that the horticulture department should be given full powers to deal with it and demanded that laboratory should be opened in every district so that every product can be checked before its use.
