AFTER the 2nd wave of Covid 19 subsided, in June 2021, the government issued guidelines to resume community classes for school going students of the Union Territory. In particular, community classes are supposed to reach out to underprivileged students who do not have access to technology to be able to join online classes. To ensure the smooth working of community classes, the government also released several procedures. For example, open-air classes with a two-meter distance between every individual are recommended. Unfortunately, these recommendations are rarely being followed in rural areas of Kashmir.
In rural areas, especially in district Kupwara, children who attend community classes can rarely be seen wearing face masks. Besides, students do not follow the two meter-distance rule and remain in close contact with one another. They often share things, such as rubbers and pencils. It seems that they are unaffected by the fact that the world is gripped by a deadly virus. As such, students attending these classes may become potential carriers of the virus.
As the cases of Covid-19 have spiked again and the third wave is around the corner, it becomes important for relevant authorities to ensure that Covid-19 guidelines are being followed at community classes. Besides, students must be encouraged to respect these guidelines. It is one thing to impart education and a different thing to teach the roles and responsibilities of a person living in a society. In present circumstances, tutors at community classes must focus on the latter one.
