Jamia Masjid To Reopen For Friday Prayers

Srinagar: The historic Jamia Masjid in the Old City here will reopen for Friday prayers after remaining closed for over three months due to coronavirus imposed lockdown, the management of central mosque said Wednesday.

According to a spokesperson of Anjuman Auqaf, Jamia Masjid Friday prayers will be offered this week as all central mosques, shrines, Imambaras across Jammu and Kashmir have resumed congregational prayers since the coronavirus cases have slowed down.

However, the Anjuman spokesperson added that as per the guidelines of medical experts, the worshippers will take precautionary measures and strictly adhere to Covid SOPs during the Friday and daily prayers.

Pertinently, the central mosque considered to be a bastion of detained Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was closed for prayers in the last week of April this year following a spike in daily coronavirus cases.

“Due to continuous unfavourable conditions and lockdown in view COVID-19 pandemic, the Jamia Masjid Srinagar was closed for Friday prayers and worship for a long time,” the Anjuman spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the Anjuman on Wednesday carried out a cleanliness drive inside the central grand mosque in which the employees and staff of the Auqaf actively participated.
