Srinagar: The weather department on Tuesday predicted two-day wet spell in Jammu and Kashmir from Wednesday leading to landslides and mudslides in the mountainous areas besides water logging in low-lying areas across the Union Territory.
“The predicted spell of widespread rainfall activity with isolated light showers to heavy falls is very likely to start tomorrow morning and will continue over Jammu and Kashmir till August 5th evening,” Deputy Director Meteorological department, Mukhtar Ahmed told Kashmir Observer on Tuesday.
“While Kashmir is expected to receive light showers, the Jammu division and its nearby areas like Poonch, Rajouri, and Reasi will witness heavy rainfall for the next two days,” he added.
However, Ahmed said that the fresh rainfall will not occur under the influence of any western or eastern disturbance but as normal monsoon showers.
“There are no advisories of flash-floods due to the inclement weather. However, people are requested to stay vigilant as the weather may also trigger landslides in few districts like Samba, Reasi and Rajouri besides the extremely sensitive points around the Srinagar Jammu highway,” Ahmed said.
“The weather may also lead to landslides, mudslides and water logging in low-lying areas,” he added.
Pertinently, the last wet spell in Jammu and Kashmir had wreaked havoc in many districts, including Kishtwar and Ganderbal after cloudburst triggered massive flash-floods leading to death of as many as ten people, while 19 are still missing.
“There are no warnings of cloudbursts and flash-floods in J&K during the two day wet spell but it’s better if the people living in the far-flung and mountainous regions stay alert,” Ahmed said.
As per the IMD official, the department has four colour-coded warnings based on the intensity of an extreme weather and on the basis of it, the department places the valley in an ascending order of green, yellow, orange and red.
“Earlier, during the last week’s flash-floods, J&K was placed at an orange level but it has now been placed at the yellow level that warns people to stay alert as the inclement weather may lead to Landslides and Flash floods,” he said.
