Srinagar: Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), an amalgam of socio- religious organisations on Monday asked people to shun unreasonable reluctance and get vaccinated sooner so that the normal life affected by pandemic is resumed and the people in Valley remain well protected for a possible third wave.
In a statement issued here, the Majlis led by incarcerated Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has said that the medical fraternity of the Valley have conveyed their serious concern to the socio-religious conglomerate that many people especially in parts of Srinagar, are reluctant to be vaccinated hence putting their lives , the lives of their family members and that of the community at large at great risk of spreading the virus and also jeopardising the attempts to overcome the pandemic.
Quoting data, the MMU spokesperson said that in district Srinagar, out of 7 lakh people who are 18 years and above, only 2.90 lakh have been vaccinated , which is less than even 50 % .
“Out of the total Covid deaths of 798 in Srinagar, 98% were those who were not vaccinated at all. This goes to show that vaccination is a protection against Covid complications and death,” he said.
Drawing a comparison between first and second corona wave quoting data, the Majlis spokesperson said that while 15 health staff members died because of Covid last year, no fatalities, pneumonia or vaccine reaction was witnessed among the 15000 health care staff and 50000 frontline workers, who received both doses of vaccine from February 2021.
“So the effectiveness of vaccination, as a means of protection from Covid 19, is well established,” he said.
MMU, as per the spokesperson said that as such the unreasonable reluctance among many for voluntary vaccination especially in some parts of Srinagar, needs to shun by one and all.
“This is imperative so that normal life in terms of business, education, religion, and travel that has been severely curtailed by the pandemic is resumed & the population of the valley is well protected for a possible third wave,” he added.
He further said that Majlis and its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq reiterate their appeal to people to get vaccinated as soon as possible and observe the SOP’s by wearing masks and maintaining social distance so that by the grace of Almighty we can overcome this pandemic as soon as possible, be protected from it and resume our normal life activities.
