4- Day Wet Spell From Friday To Bring Mercury Down: MeT Dept
Srinagar: This capital city on Tuesday witnessed the hottest day of the season with mercury settling at 34.3 degree Celsius even as the weather department predicted a relief from the scorching heat wave from Friday with a four day wet spell.
According to the Meteorological Department (MeT) officials, Srinagar recorded on Tuesday the hottest day of the season with mercury touching 34.3 degree Celsius mark. The temperature, officials said was 6 degrees above normal and is likely to fall after a three-day wet spell beginning June 11.
Deputy Director, Meteorological Department (MeT), Mukhtar Ahmed told Kashmir Observer on Tuesday that the Union Territory has enjoyed the hot weather conditions for the past few days and will continue to experience the same for the next two days till June 10.
“But from June 11, we are ready to hit a switch where sporadic periods of rain will lower the mercury below 20 degrees during the day time,” he said.
“On the first day, the intensity of precipitation will be high while later for the next two days, lower intensity of precipitation will be witnessed across the valley. In addition, there is a possibility of lightning and thunderstorms across different parts of the Valley,” he added.
He further said in Kashmir, the maximum temperature is likely to remain somewhere between 31-33 degree Celsius for the next two days. However, from June 11-June 14, Ahmed said, the temperature is expected to settle around 12-14 degree Celsius.
“After June 15, we expect a temperature above 25 degree Celsius in the Valley,” he said.
Last week, as the temperature started soaring in J&K, the MeT had issued excessive-heat warnings and heat advisories for the people in J&K. Following the same, the officials of the department had advised the people to take note of the given advisories.
“We have advised the people to stay hydrated, limit outdoor exposure and be mindful of any signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat-exhaustiveness, Ahmed said.
Giving an extended weather forecast, the MeT Deputy Director said that Kashmir is likely to have a temperature between 32 to 35.5 degree Celsius that will lead to several days of heat wave.
“A period of hot temperatures in the mid-June to early August is expected where the heat index could reach as high as 35.5 degrees. This probability for above normal temperatures will witness July as the hottest month. In this given time frame, the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat-illnesses are very much possible,” he said.
He further added that unlike Kashmir, the temperature in Jammu may soar up to 44.5 degrees during the same period.
