SRINAGAR: Braving all odds, three climbers from Pahalgam-based Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS), on Tuesday successfully scaled Mount Everest.
The first of its kind expedition of JIM&WS was held in collaboration with Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) and successfully summited Mt Everest (8848.86m) at 0620hrs on June 1st.
Mohammad Iqbal Khan, Mahfooz Elahi, both residents of Jammu and Kashmir, and Chandra Singh Negi, a resident of Uttarakhand formed the core of the expedition which was led by Principal, JIM&WS, Colonel l S Thapa, an ace climber who has scaled Mt Everest twice.
While Iqbal Khan and Chandra Negi are employed with the Indian Army, Mahfooz Elahi is a civilian instructor at JIM&WS.
The expedition was the first time that the two mountaineering institutes (JIM&WS and NIM) have collaborated. It was also the first international expedition for JIM&WS, which was formed in 1983 and trains students in mountaineering and skiing.
The expedition was flagged off on 1st April at Delhi by Joint Secretary, Armed Forces.
The team reached Everest base camp (5364m) on 12th April and after proper acclimatization, began climbing Mt Lobuche east (6119m) as part of the acclimatization process. The team also successfully summited Mt Lobuche on 24th April, considered a tough peak of the Nepal Himalayas.
It was for the first time that the Flags of both National Institutes along with national flag were hoisted on an international peak.
The expedition was supposed to take place in 2020 but had to be postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
