Valley’s Upper Reaches Receive Fresh Snow, Rains Lash Plains
Srinagar: The meteorological department on Thursday predicted improvement in wet weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir from Friday, even as the upper reaches of Valley received fresh snowfall while the rain lashed plains dipping the day temperature sharply.
“From April 23, weather is most likely to remain dry in both regions till the end of the month,” Director Meteorological department Sonam Lotus said Thursday.
He said that rain and thunderstorms at many places of J&K and snowfall over higher reaches of Kashmir and Drass -Zojila area is likely to continue till Thursday evening.
“There is a high probability of thunderstorms with lightning in most parts of Kashmir, Ramban-Banihal, Poonch -Rajouri Area during next few hours,” he said.
Meanwhile, a MeT department official said that Srinagar received 4.2 mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 0830 a.m. while it recorded a low of 8.6 degree Celsius against 10.4 degree Celsius on the previous night. It was 0.3 degree Celsius below normal in the summer capital of J&K for this time of the season.
Qazigund received 0.2mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 4.6 degree Celsius against previous night’s 7.4 degree Celsius, the official said.
Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, received 0.9mm of rain and recorded a low of 3.3 degree Celsius against 5.3 degree Celsius on the previous night, he said.
Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, received 1.0mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 3.7 degree Celsius against previous night’s 5.8 degree Celsius, the official said.
Kupwara had 11.8 mm of rain and recorded a low of 5.0 degree Celsius against 7.7 degree Celsius on the previous night, the official said.
Reports said Sadnatop received 5 inch of fresh snow along with Karnah, Keran and Z Gali in Machil in the north Kashmir district.
Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, received 6.8mm of rain and 2cms of snowfall while it recorded a low of minus 0.5 degree Celsius against 1.4 degree Celsius on the previous night, the official said.
Reports of snowfall have been also received from Kulan, Gund and Sonamarg areas of Ganderbal district in central Kashmir besides Drass and Leh in Ladakh. (With GNS inputs)
