Srinagar: The Traders Association at Regal Chowk Srinagar on Thursday blamed the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) employees of resorting to harassment of the shopkeepers in the historic marketplace.

President Kashmir Traders Manufacturers Association (KTMF) Muhammad Yaseen Khan said, “Prior to any action, they should inform the traders as it leads to loss of hard earned money.”

He added that traders are the stakeholders in every process as it is due to their taxes that administration is running its affairs.

He further added that this historic marketplace is itself an example of law abiding shopkeepers, who never violated any law but despite this, harassing them is an unethical act.

“One of the prominent shopkeepers was imposed a fine for littering when he was actually taking new stocks inside. He was directed to pay fine of Rs 5,000 within two minutes or that it would be doubled. We are not against discipline but this is not the right approach,” the traders said.

“We were fined for littering but that wasn’t the case,” a trader said.

They urged Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and LG Manoj Sinha to personally intervene in the matter.
