Militant Killed, Soldier Injured As Gunfights Erupt In South Kashmir
Srinagar: An unidentified militant was killed and a soldier injured in an ongoing encounter in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday, even as government forces and unknown militants are locked in another firefight in the neighbouring Anantnag district of south Kashmir.
Special Operations Group (SOG) of police, army’s 34 RR and CRPF personnel laid a siege around Hadipora area of Shopian on Saturday afternoon after receiving information about the presence of militants in an orchard, an official said. He said the search team came under fire from militants when they launched a combing operation in the area.
“The joint team returned the fire triggering off an encounter,” the official said.
A local news agency quoted official sources as saying that a soldier was injured in the exchange of fire with the militants. The soldier, as per the report has been removed to the hospital for treatment.
However, in a tweet put out on its official Twitter handle, Kashmir police claimed killing of an unidentified militant in the ongoing operation.
Reports also suggested presence of a 14-year-old militant in the besieged area. His family has reportedly been brought to the encounter site by the government forces in a bid to persuade him to lay down his arms
Meanwhile, another gunfight is underway between militants and state forces in Bijbehara area of neighbouring Anantnag district.
The encounter, an official said, broke out after government forces launched a search operation in Semthan area of the district on Saturday afternoon.
A local news agency reported that two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area.
Pertinently, the two fresh encounters took place just a day after seven militants including a AGuH Chief were killed in two separate encounters at Jan Mohalla Shopian and Nowbugh Tral on Friday.
