THIS is in response to a letter published in daily KO on 10th March called, “Marks Do not Matter“. I don’t fully agree with the writer when she is saying marks don’t matter. I just want to argue my case here to prove that they do infact matter. We must stop being idealistic and look at the things through a realistic prism. Currently we are living in meritocratic society, where people enjoy the status as per their merit and these marks are part of that meritocracy race. So, one can’t rule out with the stroke of a pen that marks don’t matter, when in fact, they do.
Getting good grades are a reflection of one’s hard work. I have never seen a mediocre person, who doesn’t work hard getting good marks. Infact, only those people who burn their midnight oil and prefer reading while others are sleeping get good grades.
Nowadays ,this line “marks don’t matter” has become a cliche used mostly by people for whom grapes taste sour. We must not steal the thunder from people who have worked hard to get good grades in examinations and these marks are the form of positive reinforcement given by board authorities to boost the confidence of students to achieve bigger in life.
True, don’t get carried away by these marks. Instead, make them a platform to launch big in life. As they say, “Abhi Ishq kay Imtihaan aur bhi Hain”
