Srinagar: Police on Friday claimed to have arrested a most wanted militant associate of Jaish-e-Muhammad from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after his deportation from Qatar.
Muneeb Ahmad Sofi of Bijbehara was arrested by a police team from Kulgam from IGI airport after his deportation from Qatar, a police spokesperson said Friday. Sofi, he said, was involved in a case pertaining to collection of funds for JeM.
During the course of investigation of the case, the police spokesperson said that a militant associate was arrested who revealed that he along with other OGWs were collecting money from various districts in Kashmir Valley for Jaish.
“Thereafter, the collected amount was handed over to Muneeb Ahmad Sofi who was staying in Qatar & was in contact with a Pakistan based militant namely Waleed Bhai for purchasing of arms and ammunition from Pakistan,” he said, adding that Waleed was killed in an encounter in Kulgam last year.
“Accordingly, a look out notice was published against Muneeb Ahmad Sofi and a non-bailable warrant u/s 25 Police Act was obtained from the concerned court. Consequent upon the deportation of the said accused from Qatar to India, he was arrested at IGI Airport New Delhi,” the police spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, police also claimed to have arrested three alleged militant associates of Lashkar-e-Taiba from Hajin area of Bandipora district.
Bashir Ahmed Mir, Irfan Ahmad Bhat and Hilal Ahmad Parray were arrested by a joint team of police, army’s 13 RR and CRPF 45 battalion on the basis of specific inputs, the police spokesperson said.
As per police records, he said, the trio were involved in providing shelter, logistics and other support to the active militants in Sumbal and Hajin areas. The police spokesperson also claimed to have recovered incriminating materials including 3 hand grenades, 1 AK-47 magazine and 21 AK-rounds from their possession.
“All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation. In this connection, a case FIR No. 10/2021 under relevant section of law stands registered in Police Station Hajin. Further investigation is in progress,” he added.
