Srinagar: The nocturnal fire damaged several residential houses in Sekidafar area of Safa Kadal quarter in Srinagar.
Officials said that a Sub Inspector rank officer of the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) department was also injured when he fell from a house while extinguishing the flames.
Officials said that a fire broke out in one of the residential houses at Ganderpora Chowk in Sekidafar here, which spread over several houses belonging to Muhammad Amin Lone, Shabir Ahmad Lone, Late Ghulam Ahmad Bhat, Muhammad Dilawar Bhat, Muhammad Aslam Bhat and Ghulam Muhammad Bhat.
The fire tenders rushed to the spot and a Sub Inspector rank officer from F&ES department identified as Noor Aalam Khan got injured when he fell down from a house while discharging his duty.
He was shifted to hospital for treatment where his condition was described as out of danger.
The family members whose houses got damaged in the fire were seen wailing and crying as they were not only rendered homeless but suffered loss of their all movable assets.
Pertinently, it was the third fire incident in Srinagar within the last 24 hours. Earlier fire gutted a dozen houses in nearby Nawa Kadal, Tarbal and Fateh Kadal areas of the downtown while a house was damaged in a fire incident in Nabdipora area of the city.
Kashmiri houses are vulnerable to fires especially during harsh winters as they lack fire safety measures. Short circuit in electricity is considered to be the major cause of these fires.
AAC expresses grief
Awami Action Committee (AAC) has expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of properties worth millions due to incidents of fire in various parts of Srinagar City.
In a statement the AAC expressed solidarity with the dozens of families in Old City’s Tarbal Nawakadal, Watalkadal and Safakadal areas whose houses were destroyed due to fire.
The AAC has appealed to affluent people of the areas especially the welfare organisations to provide all possible assistance to these affected families in this harsh winter and come forward in rehabilitating them.
