Highway Closure: Prices Of Essentials Skyrocket

Share

Srinagar: The skyrocketing prices of vegetables and other consumables due to continued closure of Srinagar-Jammu Highway have levied an additional burden on the common people who have been battling elements after recent snowfall.

While mutton shops have remained shut ever since the highway closure, vegetable vendors have also escalated prices taking advantage of the scarcity in the market.

As per KNT news agency potatoes are selling at Rs 50, onion Rs 70, cabbage Rs 60, tomato Rs 50 and red beans Rs 50 per kg while green leafy vegetables have also become very expensive and are selling Rs 70 per kg.

A tray of eggs is selling at Rs 200. The consumers are finding it hard to purchase groceries due to skyrocketing prices.

“The market checking squad went into hibernation on January 3, when a fresh snow spell began while profiteers are making hay”, said Fatima Begum a resident of Maisuma.
