Education for Gender Equality

EDUCATION is the only most powerful weapon which can change the worldly life of all genders. It will mediate to change all the aspects of human life such as economic, social, political, intellectual, emotional, irrespective of their Gender.

Gender inequality originates from the social attitude which favours men over the rest genders i.e. women & trans-genders. As a result, men enjoy more power, status & financial provisions than the rest genders within the society.

Gender inequality is a universal social evil, mostly prevailing in all undeveloped and underdeveloped countries. Recently, the National Commission for Women(NCW) in its report mentioned that about 25 thousand crimes against women last year in multiple forms and shapes. It is a grave concern for India which is lingering for its development. This fact reveals a close relation between gender inequality & economic inequality. These both issues can be smoothly redressed by eradicating the disparity in education between the genders.

Here, education can play a vital role in eradicating the menace of gender inequality. It can balance the existing social gap between all the genders, especially among men & women.

Education proves to be a great medium for women upliftment, as it mainly enhances their intellectual & emotional status. Today, women are more prone to socio – psychological problems, which they can address and balance through their intellectual & emotional strength obtained from the means of education.

There are government & non-governmental findings which reveal a very intimate & a multi-layered relationship between education & women empowerment. Economically, education helps women to be independent, which in turn helps them to take part in decision making at all levels , especially within their own families. It all results in substantial raise of their social status. Politically analysing it, education makes them manifestly and latently conscious  about their political milieu which leads to their increment in political participation. By empowering them socially, politically & economically, education plays an important role in their overall well-being . In addition to it, education has innumerable spillover effects on gender equality.

Looking it through the prism of theology, no religion in my view bars women from attaining any form of knowledge. Personally, I deem it proper to cite here my beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW): “Education (or attaining effective knowlege) is an essential obligation on every Muslim irrespective of their Gender.”

To conclude, I would like to mention an age old dictum, “By educating a man, we are educating an individual. But, by educating women we are educating generations”. Therefore, we can conclude from the above discussion that education plays a wide role in narrowing the scope for gender inequality.
