WINTERS have already kicked in and mercury has seen a drastic dip from past one month. This season in Jammu and Kashmir is challenging and harsh. Electricity plays a major role in heating homes and work places in such a situation. One would expect the electricity supply to be increased by the administration but on the contrary the power cuts have increased by hours at the onset of the winter.
With temperature plunging to sub-zero degrees in major parts, the situation becomes more challenging and severe due to the Covid-19 outbreak. People having respiratory health issues already face health related problems during the winter and Covid-19 cases are also peaking.
The oxygen concentrators used by people who’ve opted to get treated at home, require a constant supply of electricity. These days we have a situation where oxygen saturation is dropping in patients posing a risk of life to them; the power cuts in such an urgency becomes criminal and unjustified. Everyone cannot afford inverters and generators. This makes the situation worse for people from economically underprivileged families.
Jammu and Kashmir has a potential of producing 16575 MW of electricity according to CEA (Central Electrical Authority). It’s already harnessing a total of 3263.46MW of electricity from rivers like Jhelum, Chenab and Indus. The electricity produced on our resources is sold to other states while keeping us in the dark. The administration needs to review the power cut schedule and customise it to the conditions more convenient for winters so that people don’t suffer.
